Amita is Partner (Head – Disputes, North India) in the dispute resolution practice of the firm and has advised domestic and international clients on a broad range of contractual, regulatory and constitutional disputes. She focusses on shareholders’ disputes, conflicts between founders and private equity investors, business model defense in emerging sectors, securities litigation and family succession disputes. She appears before courts, tribunals, regulators and arbitral tribunals. She has deep expertise in corporate governance matters and has advised on the most high-profile governance conflicts in India.

Amita graduated as university Rank 1 from NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad (2005) and was the recipient of 6 gold medals including the Best Student for Overall Excellence. She also has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) from Stanford University. She was seconded with the Securities Group of Cravath, Swaine & Moore, New York, in 2008-2009.

She was recently appointed on the Board of Studies of the Munjal School of Law as an external member.

Professional Experience

  • Represented the Government of India in the strategic disinvestment of Air India Limited, including successfully defending three writ petitions challenging the disinvestment;
  • Represented Dr. Mrs. Bina Modi in a family trust dispute and successfully obtained an anti arbitration injunction from the Hon’ble High Court of Delhi;
  • Represented Essar Bulk Terminal Limited in various disputes across fora including the Supreme Court of India, High Court of Gujarat, National Company Law Tribunal, Commercial Court at Surat and an arbitration tribunal and inter alia successfully obtained a mandatory payment order at an interim relief stage and the first ruling by the Supreme Court on the scope of Section 9(3) of the Arbitration and Conciliation Act;
  • Represented Mr. Sachin Bansal in respect of proceedings initiated under the Foreign Exchange Management Act as an erstwhile director of the Flipkart Group;
  • Represented Dhampur Sugar Mills Limited before the Supreme Court of India challenging an order of the National Green Tribunal;
  • Represented several listed companies before SEBI on compliance with securities laws;
  • Advised several listed companies on corporate governance matters, including Infosys Limited;
  • Advised on the sale of Essar Oil Limited to a consortium comprising Rosneft, Trafigura and United Capital Partners (which is the largest FDI transaction in the history of corporate India).
  • Advised on various listed company takeovers including Axis Bank’s acquisition of Enam Securities; Holcim’s acquisition of Ambuja Cements; GSPC’s acquisition of Gujarat Ga; the acquisition and sale of Thomas Cook India; Sequential open offers and delisting offer by Linde AG of BOC India Limited.
